What is a Flying Salve?

A flying salve is a legendary “witches’ ointment” used to achieve flight, usually meaning spirit-travel, trance, or dream-journey, not literal levitation. In witchcraft lore, it’s a threshold tool: a balm rubbed on the body or a staff to slip into the night-world (sabbath, visions, shapeshifting, communion with spirits).

In alchemy terms, it’s a fixed vessel carrying a volatile virtue: a stable base that delivers a subtle power, symbolizing inner sublimation—the “ascent” of consciousness from the heavy/body-bound to the airy/spirit realm.

PURPOSE & EFFECT

Threshold-and-trance: bitter herbcraft at the front (wormwood), protective clarity through the heart (rosemary, lavender, clary sage), and a resin-wood altar base (frankincense, myrrh, spruce, oak, dark vanilla). It’s built to feel like night work done safely—a calm veil, clean edges, and a grounded “container” so the mind can roam without spilling.

• Wormwood

Purpose: The gatekeeper. Traditional “between-worlds” bitterness—banishing, breaking enchantments, and opening the liminal door.
Effect: A sharp, eerie clarity. Feels like stepping over a threshold: alert, focused, slightly otherworldly.

• Rosemary
